“We Want the Airwaves”
September 24th 2006 12:33 pm
I know this is the millionth incarnation of this blog but I hope this will stick this time.
If you know me, you know that one of my passions in college was college radio (WDOM 91.3FM Providence College Radio!) and since graduating it’s one of the things I’ve missed the most.
Now that I’m in grad school at Quinnipiac I’ve found my way back to college radio on WQAQ 98.1FM. I’ll be hosting my Left of the Dial show Saturday mornings from 11:00 AM to noon where I’ll be playing both current bands (and desperately avoiding the overused “i” label) and classics of the alternative rock era.
What I hope to do with the show is illustrate how the history of alternative/college rock is a living mosaic. Often we read about all of these old, influential bands but never hear them. Furthermore, sometimes we’re a bit quick to declare that music was better “back then” and sell short some of the amazing bands out right now.
So this will be the online home for my show – a place where you can hear Pavement, Big Star, and the Jam right next to TV on the Radio, Broken Social Scene, and Sufjan Stevens. Come here for playlists, links I might mention on the air, and perhaps even for a “podcast” version of the show if I can figure out how to do that. Also, feel free to leave me feedback or just say hi!
And to my friends, old and new, I offer you these words:
“If I don’t see you in a long, long while
I’ll try to find you left of the dial”
