About Me

“If I don’t see you in a long, long while
I’ll try to find you left of the dial” - The Replacements (1985)

Left of the Dial is programed and hosted by me (Brian). I’ve been involved with college radio since 2001. I was a DJ for WDOM in Providence, RI from 2001 - 2005 where I hosted shows under the names BKnights, Welcome to the Working Week, and Left of the Dial. When I started my Masters’ degree at Quinnipiac I joined up with WQAQ and revived Left of the Dial.

Here’s what I wrote in my first entry, I think it sums up the show pretty well:

I’ll be playing both current bands (and desperately avoiding the overused “i” label) and classics of the alternative rock era. What I hope to do with the show is illustrate how the history of alternative/college rock is a living mosaic. Often we read about all of these old, influential bands but never hear them. Furthermore, sometimes we’re a bit quick to declare that music was better “back then” and sell short some of the amazing bands out right now.

So this will be the online home for my show - a place where you can hear Pavement, Big Star, and the Jam right next to TV on the Radio, Broken Social Scene, and Sufjan Stevens. Come here for playlists, links I might mention on the air, and perhaps even for a “podcast” version of the show if I can figure out how to do that [Editor's Note: Fat Chance!]. Also, feel free to leave me feedback or just say hi!

That being said, I’m always willing to take requests, feedback, and suggestions. I’m always looking for new things to listen to and new things to share on the air. So tune in to WQAQ, send in your requests, and enjoy listening to Left of the Dial.

About the name: Left of the Dial comes from a Replacements song of the same name that I like to play often and recommend highly.

I also keep a blog titled Goodnight to the Rock & Roll Era where I rant about music and sports, share links that I find interesting or hilarious, and appease my addiction to YouTube.
